Day 5 – Lunges make stairs difficult

If you were a fly on the wall at my work today you may have gotten a 6 pack from watching me walk up and down the stairs to get to and from my office. It took me about 5 minutes to walk up about 20 stairs. It was hysterical. Grabbing my legs and butt to try to make the soreness a little easier to handle. Yes soreness!

Yesterday I was able to get up super early (YAY!) and complete my first morning workout challenge. It was not a walk in the park. Those toneitup ladies are not joking!! I had to finish in the 38 degree weather outside because I was dying in the 70 degree furnace of a house. And what did the workout center around? Yep, legs and booty.

Here was the workout I chose. It was called Santa Baby. It does not say in the video but you do three sets of these moves then run.

Yes cheesy but I love that they are trying to be creative.

I actually enjoy being sore. It makes me feel accomplished and happy that my body is hopefully healing stronger. It makes for a great laugh too.

Todays workout…welp failure #2. I had to find a friend and try a new workout. Well, I was able to find a new DVD I wanted to try but my roommate wasn’t feeling well and when I googled “working out while sore” the results almost came out of the computer like a mom slap on the hand saying No mam. So needless to say, today I did not work out. I did have a super healthy dinner to make me feel little less guilty.

Tomorrow is the dreaded 30 reps and hour workout. I may nickname this Power Hour day. Every hour I have to do 30 lunges or 30 tummy tucks. Based on the way my legs still feel, I think my tummy is going to be tucking often.

Challenge #3 – Actually finish one book per Month

Growing up I had an unbelievable affection for books. I never wanted a TV in my room and I could always be found laying in my bed with a book in hand. Some of my favorites were…

Throughout the school years I protested reading because everyone else was telling me what to read. Unfortunately that fantastic attitude landed me in a position of never reading. Sad day. It was not until college where my love for reading came back.

Since my love for reading has been renewed…particularly with a warm cup of coffee and a blanket next to a fireplace (too picky?) I have started reading all kinds of wonderful books. Started being a keyword. I bet I have started around 11 books in the last year that I did not finish. It wasn’t because they were not interesting. Some were very compelling but then the next book seems to look more exciting to me.

I decided to make a list of 12 books that I would like to read (widdled down from a list of 90). They cover many topics, fiction and non fiction, and I shuffled them around to make a month by month list for 2012.

Day 3 – You’re killin me Smalls!

Thank you Jesus for Christine. My wonderful roommate who is so great at being a friend and a steward of yours. I tend to be a natural recluse (not the spider kind) and shut the world away sometimes. However Christine completely sets me free of that burden of who I think I was made to be. Laughing and giggling for 3 straight hours talking about life, I am not sure I have ever had this great of a girl friend. And we do not even get to hang out as much as we would like! Thank you Jesus for Christine.

Your word today reminded me that although I am so blessed with wonderful people in my life, that you are my constant companion. Thank you for never leaving me even when I eat too much chocolate and don’t read my bible.

Today was a great day. Truly a great day. Minus the fact that I got a buy one get one free Blizzard coupon from Dairy Queen. Oh Lord please help me delete that email.

In ToneItUp News: The Challenge today was a HIIT workout (still no clue what those letters stand for) but it included running sprints outside. Considering its super cold outside I opted to do their alt workout which was one of any workouts on their site. I did a workout that was mostly arms and a little legs. It took me about 25 min and felt amazing! Okay it hurt. But I am taking care of my body and that always makes me feel pretty great.

Rough news…tomorrow’s workout…getting up 30-40 min early to workout. Ouch. Although I will be the first one to admit that I always feel better after working out in the morning, I am not looking forward to this one. I have had a really hard time getting my head off of my wonderful pillow. I blame the feathers inside. But my alarm is set. 6am. Going in with a happy heart and accepting it.

Day 2 – Humility and Sweating

First monday of the challenge and oh boy am I lucky I do not have to work today. I feel like there so much to get done!

Day 2 of Jesus Calling..well you can say that Jesus completely put me in my place. I decided to read it while I was making my coffee which I felt a little guilty for because I love praying while I read it.

The devotional includes: “Do not skimp on our time together.” “Focus your thoughts on me” “Resist the clamor of tasks waiting to me done. You have chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from you”

Way to go Niki. Way to go. Thanks for humbling me Lord. Note taken happily. Needless to say, that was read again in a different space and time. And it was so much sweeter.

Tone It Up challenge for today was put on facebook. 60 mins for me to do what I would like for my body. So far I have gotten in 10 minutes of intense stretching. Since I have not pushed my body in a long time I felt this was a smart start. Felt wonderful!

I plan on doing 20 min of walking and 30 min on the bike. It WILL get done 🙂

Before that I shall watch my Buckeyes beat the Gators. Caio.


Welp today marks another new year! Rang in the new year dancing to Roxanne and relaxing with friends. Not a bad start.

Zach and I went to Hopepark Church this morning (a place where Zach may be called to work!), met some wonderful people and heard a wonderful message about communion. Was pleasantly surprised with new thoughts on communion. The speaker, Angela, brought the painting of the last supper to mind and then compared that time to wonderful family pictures in her house. Asking goers to cherish that time as a memory in our lives. I believe I did not feel the impact of the last supper painting until she set it side by side with pictures from today. Now I would like to have it hanging in my house! What a memory of  my Councilor and his close friends sharing a beautiful moment. This moment beside it was when I had to send a picture text to my brother teasing him that I was eating all of his favorite cookies. Ah memories.


Moving on, Jesus Calling this morning…check! I have also been refreshing my browser on my computer randomly to get the Tone It Up calendar. And I just got it about 5 min ago. It will definitely be a challenge but one I am ready to take on. Day 1…to blog about my 6 week goals and my 1 year goals.

  • Eat healthier
  • Take on challenges with a happy heart

  • Build muscle
  • Feel like I was never in an accident (that’s a prayer)

I may sneak in some Crossfit on days when they do not specify a workout. However some of these look ridiculous! 30 lunges or 30 tummy tucks ever hour this Friday…BRING IT ON!

Challenge #2 – 6 Week Toneitup Challenge

Get your butt movin!! That is what my inner athlete is screaming at me daily. Since my accident last January, I can’t really say I have been well…exercising. And coming from a life time of dancing, gymnastics, cheerleading, and running a half marathon the year before, it is pretty discouraging.

“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” 1 Corinthians 9:27

Whoa that’s heavy. I talk about eating right and exercising regularly and think I do a decent job but upon closer examination, I would probably be failing if it were a class.

This year things are about to change! YAY! Starting January 1 I am going to be doing the Tone It Up Challenge over at It is run by two girls Katrina and Karena and they are easy to relate to and make the workouts exciting while also throwing in fun new things throughout the year.

This is what the challenge says:

Well I failed the first challenge. No one wants to do this with me! Not the best start but I am keeping on. Not much to go on now but all of those words make me squeal…challenges…accountability…prizes…incentives…motivation…oh and workouts. That’s what I am talking about. No idea what they have in store but my Brooks and weak little body is ready to get into high gear! Including focusing on healthy eating as well!
